The Project

The Project

EnviroSolution consultants were contacted by Manchester City Council to provide emergency advice on the impact of a sinkhole on the surrounding built environment and to investigate the likely cause. Following the initial report, an urgent desktop study was completed overnight and a site visit was completed the next morning by a geotechnical engineer and engineering geologist.

The Challenge

The Challenge

The site required rapid technical input because the sinkhole presented an immediate concern for public safety, nearby structures and potential historic mining influence.

The Solution

The Solution

The desktop study indicated the sinkhole was located in a colliery area. Although known workings were not considered likely to have an immediate influence on surrounding buildings, further Coal Authority investigation was recommended. The area immediately surrounding the sinkhole was made safe and the likely cause was identified quickly.

The Benefit

The Benefit

Within approximately 18 hours of commission, EnviroSolution had attended site, advised on immediate risk and relayed findings to Manchester City Council and the Coal Authority.
